BORN IN THE BURN

Nature-driven endurance support.

Pieter van Eeden ran long. Ran hard. And when his legs needed something, he went to the field.

Stinging nettle. Straight from the ground. The warmth it produced, the way it kept him moving long past the point most people stop - he wanted that in a formula. Something you could carry. Something you could rely on.

That's where TUFFEN started.

Not in a lab. Not in a boardroom. On a long run, in the burn, where ideas either die or become something real.

TUFFEN became something real.

ORIGIN

Where did the STINGING NETTLE idea come from?

Kaapsehoop. Mid-run. A patch of stinging nettle across the trail and no way around it - so Pieter ran through. The burn stayed with him for a while afterwards. A good burn.

So, he went back. This time he rubbed the nettle onto his fatigued legs on purpose - and got the same sensation. From then on, he was rubbing nettles whenever he saw them. Eventually the thought landed: I want to share this with other athletes. He did the research, found the right lab, and actioned the idea.

That’s the Heat Cream. Powered by stinging nettle isn’t a slogan. It’s the origin.

What moment made TUFFEN real for you?

Years before the brand existed, Pieter kept a can of ordinary heat spray with the words TUFFEN - TTFU hand-written on it. When his kids were young and playing sport, and things got hard and they’d “get hurt” to avoid losing, he’d spray them with it and tell them: no matter how hard it gets, we finish what we start. Tuffen up. It’s inside of you.

Then came a brutally hard season of his own - middle to end of 2025, business and life, close to losing hope. One morning he tried to run himself to the point where he couldn’t run anymore. Out there, he remembered a line he’d carried from Napoleon Hill - that in your greatest adversity lies the seed of your greatest success - and the can of “TUFFEN” in his pack.

In a moment of clarity, in the furnace of it, something was born: no one is coming to save you. You must TTFU. He went home and started building TUFFEN that day.

How many formulas did you test before launch?

For the Heat Cream: one core formula, refined through samples with the R&D team. Pieter knew exactly what he wanted, which made the tweaks fast - and the lab team made it easier still.

The rest of the range came from gaps he kept hitting over years of running: insect repellent that should have been in the sunscreen. Colloidal silver in the anti-chafe. A barrier that wouldn’t leave fatty marks on his kit. A balm that genuinely readied his overworked legs for the next session.

Every product exists because something was missing.

Why did you call it TUFFEN?

Two reasons. The first is the story above - TUFFEN, TTFU, written on a can years before it was a brand.

The second is the honey badger. Mention one to anyone and you get the same reply: that’s a tuff animal. But Pieter sees more in it - resilience, grit, focus on the goal instead of the distractions. Keep fighting till you get the honey. Don’t change your route when you see the lions. Eat the honey while the bees are stinging you.

Don’t let setbacks keep you from the goal. That’s TUFFEN.

PRODUCT USE

Heat Cream vs Relax Balm - when to use each?

The way Pieter uses them:

Heat Cream is the before-and-during product. Apply about 30 minutes before you start; on a long run, reapply after roughly two hours.

Relax Heat Balm is for afterwards - after a hard session before bed, while stretching or doing mobility work, or on a specific spot that’s had a tuff day: a calf, a shoulder, a stiff neck after a stressful week.

One gets you into the work. One closes the day out.

Walk us through TUFFEN use across a 50km.

Before: Heat Cream about 30 minutes out. Anti-Chafe on all the sensitive areas and feet. Dual Defence SPF before leaving the house.

During: Heat Cream again roughly every two hours - he doesn’t want to run without the burn. Anti-Chafe and SPF reapplied as needed.

After: Shower. Relax Heat Balm. Done.

What should a first-time Heat Cream user expect?

A warming sensation that introduces itself slowly, then builds. Because it’s a natural formula, the intensity differs for everyone.

Start with a light layer. The heat will find you.

How intense is the Relax Balm heat sensation?

It differs from person to person. For Pieter it’s a steady warmth that keeps reminding him it’s been applied and it’s at work. For others the burn runs hotter. Either way, the reviews agree: “the burn is intense… but nice.”

It also helps sensitive people become a little TUFFER.

FORMULATION

What makes "Naturally Activated" different from other products?

It starts working when you start working. As your muscles warm up and you begin to sweat - even a little - the natural ingredients in the Heat Cream and Relax Heat Balm come alive and build with your effort.

Here’s the honest part: it wasn’t planned that way. It’s how the formulation, built around stinging nettle, turned out to behave. The nettle holds the key.

Why colloidal silver - what does it do differently?

Pieter has chafed enough in his life to know most people only remember anti-chafe after the damage is done. The mild silver protein in the formula was added for skin support - so the product is caring for your skin in the same places friction is doing its work.

Barrier first. Skin support built in.

Is Dual Defence DEET-free and effective against SA insects?

Yes - DEET-free, SPF 50+, broad spectrum. And it was tested right here against South African conditions and South African insects. Built for the bush, the trail, and everything that bites all day long.

Are TUFFEN products safe for sensitive skin?

As with any topical product: patch test on a small area first. The formulas have been through testing, but skin is personal - and there’s always a special kind of sensitive. Start light, see how your skin responds, then go.
